We can all agree that puppies are without a doubt the most adorable things in life; however taking care of a puppy is no walk in the park. When it comes time to bringing your new pup home for the first time, you can count on unlimited joy, cleaning up after your pup and a major lifestyle adjustment.
Here are a few tips on what you should plan on doing the first few days you and your puppy are home:
Take Fido to the vet
Although this doesn’t seem fun, it’s a necessary and essential step. You’ll want to take your puppy to a vet for an initial puppy examination to make sure the pup is in good health and free of medical conditions. Plus, taking your dog to the vet for the first time allows for open communication in the future.
Find the right puppy food
Before you drive to the store to purchase food, do a little research and talk to your vet, breeder and fellow dog owners. While doing your research, think about the quality of ingredients since your pups diet can make all of the difference in his or her future health.
Begin house training
You should start training your pup as soon as you get home, just keep in mind that it will take time and patience. According to American Kennel Club, there are three tried-and-true methods for training your puppy: crate training, frequent trips outdoors and paper training. Try to start training early so your puppy becomes familiar with a routine.
Bond with your pup
It’s very important to interact with your puppy as soon as you bring him home. You can nurture them through affection, training, grooming, playtime and exercise. After all, your pup just left its familiar surroundings, so he or she will really need the extra love as he adapts to your new home and family.
