Summer is around the corner and every dog owner knows what that means: less freezing walks in the morning, fewer layers you have to put on, and more fun times outside with your pup. But summer also means hot temperatures, which can prove problematic to any dog if not prepared for.
Here are four tips to keeping your dog cool and comfortable this summer:
Walk in the cooler parts of the day
Summer has the sun up early, and down late, offering dog owners plenty of light to go for a stroll. But afternoons in the summer can be especially hot, as the sun bakes the pavement for hours. Try to get your daily exercise with your dog during the cooler parts of the day, either in the morning or evening. Trust us; your dog will appreciate it!
Wanted: water, and shade
A lot of the time, the easiest way to monitor how your dog is doing outside is to take account of yourself: Are you hot? Thirsty? Short of breath? If so, then your dog most likely is, too. To avoid that issue, be sure to carry water (preferably frozen) with you at all times, in order to keep your dog and yourself hydrated. When walking, look out for shaded spots underneath trees or buildings to take a quick break, and catch your breath. You both deserve it!
Cool on the inside
It’s not just on outdoor walks that you need to be careful with your dog during the summer—sometimes; the inside of your house can get even hotter. So close the drapes, and keep air conditioning or fans on whenever the dog is in the house, even if you’re not there. That way, your dog will truly feel comfortable, both inside, and out.
A dog’s hair is its least favorite friend in the summer, as it can make the dog hotter, faster. Before the temperatures really soar, give your dog a good trim that gets rid of any tangles or mats, which can make a pup hotter. But don’t go too far—sometimes a coat can actually help a dog cool down. Ask your vet first, and foremost.
